Plasma Technology in Phytopathology​

One of our current research work is focuse on the impact of atmospheric glow discharge plasma and plasma activated water on reducing rice seed-borne disease’s . It has been shown that the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species by plasma containing electrons, positive or negative ions, and neutral species has antimicrobial activity. In this study, four plasmas were used for seed treatment viz., O2 -air glow discharge plasma for 90s, 120s, air-plasma activated water for 9 and 12 min. , control (without treatment) and chemical treatment were used in order to compare the treatment effect. The plasma treatments used for this study showed a promising positive effect on seed germination and plant growth, and reduction of blast, brown spot and bakanae severity in the field level.

Trichoderma Antagonistic Properties in a Dual Test

In a dual test, Trichoderma, a group of fungi, is evaluated for its antagonistic properties against plant pathogens. The test involves co-cultivating Trichoderma with a target pathogen on a growth medium, allowing them to interact directly. Trichoderma demonstrates its antagonism through mechanisms like nutrient competition, production of lytic enzymes, and secretion of antifungal compounds. The dual test assesses the inhibitory effects, such as growth suppression or inhibition zones, which indicate Trichoderma’s ability to control or suppress the target pathogen. This evaluation provides valuable information on Trichoderma’s potential as a biocontrol agent and its role in integrated disease management strategies for agriculture and horticulture.

Biochar in Sustainable Agriculture

Biochar is charred organic matter intended for use as a soil amendment. Biochar is produced by a thermochemical decomposition process called pyrolysis, which consists of heating biomass at a high temperature (≈400 to 800ᵒC) in a limited oxygen environment (Lehmann and Joseph, 2009). The pyrolysis of biomass results in biochar as well as gas and liquid products in varying proportions depending on the type of organic material and heating temperature. It provides rich source of carbon enhance the efficiency of fertilizer, Holds soil nutrients to regain fertility, increase soil water holding capacity and also helps in carbon atmospheric sequestration.
